US-Iran war: Diplomatic efforts continue as both sides maintain military readiness

Diplomatic efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran are continuing, with both sides signalling a willingness to negotiate while maintaining military readiness.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says Tehran has delivered a strong response to Washington and that the next move rests with the United States. President Donald Trump says Iran wants a settlement, while US Vice President JD Vance says the administration sees progress towards a possible negotiated agreement.

But major differences remain. Washington wants verifiable guarantees that Iran will not rebuild its nuclear programme, while Tehran is seeking action on economic restrictions and the US blockade of Iranian ports. China is also becoming more involved in diplomatic efforts.

Zun Alinani, founding director of the Arab Perspectives Institute, joins Al Jazeera live from Doha to discuss the negotiations, the obstacles to an agreement and the risk of renewed escalation.
