Students from low-income suburbs of Paris are leading protests demanding fairer funding, better school conditions and equal opportunities in France’s education system.
Al Jazeera reports on the movement, which has gained momentum through social media as students highlight inequalities between disadvantaged communities and prestigious institutions such as the Sorbonne University.
Soumaya Sarre, a Sorbonne student from Bondy, says the protests reflect a deep sense of injustice and systemic inequality. In Saint-Denis, students describe deteriorating school buildings, teacher shortages and an intimidating police presence.
Student Nina says young people in these communities feel “abandoned”, arguing that where they grow up can limit their opportunities from an early age.
Although the French government says it is seeking solutions, students remain sceptical, pointing to police violence and what they see as a lack of meaningful responses to their demands.
The report examines the growing debate over educational equality, social exclusion and the experiences of young people seeking a fairer future in France.
