Hundreds of protesters have gathered in Paris as nationwide demonstrations and strikes sweep across France, with workers and students demanding higher wages, better public services and improved conditions in schools.
The demonstrations, called by trade unions, have spread beyond the student-led movement that began in Paris. In Marseille, tear gas, smoke and loud explosions were reported as protesters marched through the streets. In the capital, police confronted groups of high school students, some of whom staged sit-ins.
The French government has deployed around 70,000 police officers nationwide following violent clashes and riots last month. Despite recent government concessions, protesters say more action is needed to address rising living costs, low wages and inequality.
