Analyst Diamond Isinger on why Canada-US trade talks collapsed

Diamond Isinger, a policy strategist and former special advisor on Canada-US relations to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, joins Al Jazeera from Vancouver to discuss the collapse of Canada-US trade talks. She says negotiations fell apart in the eleventh hour multiple times before finally breaking down, with the US bringing last-minute demands, including limits on Canada striking agreements with other international partners.

Isinger says Canada’s dollar-for-dollar retaliation, set to take effect September 8th, was the only realistic path forward, arguing the US administration responds best to strength. She says the move has broad, cross-partisan public support in Canada, even though it will bring short-term economic pain for both countries.
