Nottingham lecturers strike for 10 weeks over job and course cuts as UK universities struggle

Staff at eight UK universities are set to strike amid a worsening financial crisis in higher education. At Nottingham University, some lecturers will stop work for 10 weeks, almost the entire first term, to protest plans to cut hundreds of jobs and dozens of courses.

Around 600 jobs are at risk as the university tries to plug a $112-million gap, blaming funding cuts, rising costs and competitive recruitment.

Students say their daily lives are being disrupted, with lectures cancelled and supervisors on picket lines. Physics student Jamie Carey says students are caught in the middle. Those interviewed overwhelmingly support the strikes and blame the government, not their universities.

Al Jazeera’s Charlie Angela reports from Nottingham.
